CSI-IL-001 Mastering Generalized MPLS [G-MPLS]

Course Description

The common control plane architecture implementation at the optical layer of networks is traceable to two companies: Lighterra (now Ciena's Core Director) and Monterey Network's Wavelength Router (acquired by Cisco Systems).  These early implementations followed a similar track: utilize IP control protocols such as OSPF to select and manage wavelength availability and paths on the optical network.

These early implementations have now morphed into the open standards of Generalized MPLS or GMPLS.  This course opens the architecture and requirements design of using common control protocols to control layer 1 network capacity, and links these optical and photonic devices to their layer 2 and layer 3 counterparts all under the MPLS umbrella of operation and management.

This insightful and revealing course has been designed to bring either traditional networking experts from the voice and telephony world or new-to-networking individuals up to speed on the world of MPLS and GMPLS Networking.  This course is designed as an instructor led knowledge-based course over the span of two days delivered in a swift, detailed, and understandable way by knowledgeable and experienced optical networking specialists.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the course are:

  1. Develop a knowledge-based skill set targeted at GMPLS architecture and requirements in the following key areas:
    • GMPLS Architectures
    • Link Management Protocol
    • Generalized labels and label bundling
  2. Master the network control implications of GMPLS

  3. Understand the control plane protocol modifications for applying MPLS technologies on the layer 1 network

  4. Observe and understand the future of GMPLS standards

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is anyone in the telecommunications field that requires a solid and complete understanding of the architecture and requirements for Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) in networking and desires knowledge-based skills that can be applied to their job function.  Ideal candidates are:

  • Network Administrators
  • Operations individuals that will provide GMPLS design, configuration and support services
  • Development Engineers that must know GMPLS architecture and requirements in order to provide hardware and software solutions
  • Network Design Engineers that need to understand GMPLS services and applications
  • Network Management individuals that are providing element and network management tools
  • Technical sales individuals that must be able to correlate features with functionality
  • Technical marketing individuals that want more than just a basic understanding GMPLS
  • Certification Track individuals that need to expand their knowledge and studies
