Course Description:

There are major efforts around the world to define the next generation wireless networks. This effort is termed 5G, for fifth generation mobile networks.cloud 5G101

Demonstrations of 5G technologies are expected as early as the Olympics in 2018. Although the technical specification work is not expected to be complete until 2019/2020.

This course will provide the learner with an understanding of the goals and performance targets of 5G, as well as the major technologies that will enable those targets to be achieved. This course is designed for learners that need to understand the evolution of wireless networks and new emerging breakthrough technologies that will enable the next leap in wireless network performance.

Course Objectives:

  • Build a simple but solid base of understanding and usage of 5G
  • Illuminate and explore the use of frequencies bands above 6 GHz including mmWave
  • Reveal the key technologies and topologies that are enabling several order of magnitude improvements over 4G LTE systems
  • Explore the details underpinning 5G technologies that are critical to meeting the need of new IoT applications
  • Gain technical expertise on 5G and why it is important to our network future, and how you can better manage that importance in your job function

At the end of this course the student should be able to:

  • Understand key acronyms and terminology used in defining 5G standards
  • List the primary market drivers and service requirements driving the 5G specifications
  • Articulate the roadmap and timelines for developing 5G wireless standards
  • Describe the key technologies that enable advanced 5G services

The target audience for this course is anyone in Engineering, Test, Customer Support, Technical Marketing, or even Sales and Marketing that requires an understanding of the fundamental operations of 5G and seeks to comprehend the challenges of 5G that can be applied to their job function.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Operations individuals that will provide wireless configuration and support wireless services.
  • Network Design Engineers that need to understand next generation wireless networks.
  • Network Management individuals that are providing element and network management tools to manage next generation wireless networks.
  • Technical sales individuals that must be able to correlate wireless customer needs and emerging wireless functions and capabilities.
  • Technical marketing individuals that want more than just a basic understanding of the wireless technologies and architectures underlying 5G.
  • Research and development individuals that need to expand their knowledge and studies of 5G wireless technologies and network topologies.
  • Network Administrators that need to plan for future wireless network growth.

Course Prerequisites:

This course is designed to appeal to anyone that needs to be knowledgeable on 5G wireless technologies and network architectures. It will also appeal to learners that needs to understand how 5G plans to support the predicted exponential growth in wireless traffic.

The ideal student will have some experience in 4G wireless technologies, networks and/or operations. Students with no prior knowledge of mobile wireless networks would benefit from taking the 4G 101 Foundation and 4G 201 Advanced courses prior to taking this class. However, no prior knowledge is required.

Course Materials:

Students will be provided with a Course Student Guide via the Online School of Network Sciences as well as many course reference materials.
