Course Description:

This class is for anyone looking for an introduction to WLANs and how Wi-Fi supports voice and video applications in both the enterprise and the service provider environments. This course provides an in-depth discussion on the key specifications IEEE 802.11e QoS, 802.11k Radio Measurements, and 802.11v Wireless Network Manawifi voice video smallgement. These specifications provide essential support for real-time multimedia applications by enabling, measuring, and managing QoS on Wi-Fi networks. This course will also detail the IEEE 802.11r Fast BSS Transition and how it ensure a continued voice or video connection as users move between Access Points by defining a fast handover mechanism. 

This course assumes a solid understanding of how Wi-Fi works. Students not familiar with how devices connect and send data over Wi-Fi networks would benefit from attend the Wi-Fi 101 Foundation Course.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Illuminate and explore the challenges and solutions in providing voice and video services over a Wi-Fi network
  • Build a solid base of understanding of the features and capabilities defined in the IEEE 802.11e,k,r,v amendments
  • Discover the mechanisms and techniques defined in IEEE 802.11e,k,r,v amendments come together to deliver real-time applications over Wi-Fi networks
  • Discuss the Wi-Fi operational aspects to support real-time services including QoS, fast BSS transition, RF measurements, and wireless network management
  • Become informed on the important developments and services now available to my company to leverage our resources and talent

The attendee will be provided access to ongoing Q&A and discussion for the subject. We will deliver this on site or via web meeting tools in two 4-hour sessions. This briefing is designed to meet the needs of anyone that requires insight into these Wi-Fi technologies, from managers to designers.

Course Prerequisites:

This course is designed to appeal to anyone needing to deepen their skills and knowledge of 802.11 and the challenges of real time services over WLANs. The ideal student will have some experience in networking and operations. Student without this experience can take the Wi-Fi 101 Foundation Course  prior to taking this Wi-Fi 301 advanced course. Student will also benefit if they take the Wireless Security class before taking this class.

This course is lab based. It uses Wireshark to look at 802.11 packets to reinforce key learnings. No prior knowledge of Wireshark is required. However, students are expected to download and install Wireshark prior to attending the class. Wireshark can be downloaded at www.wireshark.org/download.html.
