Course Description:

ZigBee is a set of specifications that define how small low power devices communicate. It is a leading standard for the connectivity of wireless sensors used in home, utility, and industrial environments. Applications include controlling light switches, patient monitoring, smart energy, and traffic management systems.

ZigBee defines the higher layer protocols builds on the IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) standard to deliver a low power wireless network. This course starts with an overview of the 802.15.4 physical and MAC layers. It then takes the student through the evolution of ZigBee network layer, covering ZigBee 2007, ZigBee PRO, and ZigBee IP.

The course includes lab exercises that look at the details of the ZigBee stack, including ZigBee beacons and commands, 6LOWPAN compression and fragmentation headers, and RPL ICMP packets. The lab exercises use the Wireshark™ packet analysis tool, but no prior knowledge of Wireshark is required. Students are expected to install the Wireshark tool prior to attending the class.

Note: Students that have attended the 2-day Low Power and Lossy Networks course, may see some overlap in the course material. The Wireless LLN is focused on comparing and contrasting a broad spectrum of protocols deployed to meet the diverse needs of sensor, control, and monitoring network.

  • Be familiar with all layers of ZigBee and the underlying wireless technology
  • Distinguish between a beacon and non-beacon ZigBee network

  • Understand the transition to ZigBee IP
  • Describe the IETF 6loWPAN and RPL standards adopted by ZigBee


The target audience for this course is anyone in Engineering, Test, Customer Support, Technical Marketing, or even Sales and Marketing that requires an understanding of the ZigBee Protocol and seeks to comprehend the challenges of implementing the Internet of Things (IoT) as applied to their job function.

Course Prerequisites:

This course is designed to appeal to anyone needing the skills and knowledge of the ZigBee Protocol or needing to understand the wireless technologies that are enabling the Internet of Things (IoT). The course does not require any prior IPv6 or wireless knowledge. However, it is highly desirable that learners have rudimentary knowledge of IP networking. Familiarity with the Wireshark packet analysis tool is also preferred.
