Course Description:

ho wifi6 80211axThe Wi-Fi Alliance are calling 802.11ax-based products Wi-Fi 6/6E, the next generation of Wi-Fi connectivity. Wi-Fi 6/6E products changes the focus away from higher data rates for a single device, to improving the overall user experience in dense network environments where there are many other devices competing for the radio resources.

Wi-Fi 6/6E products will improve capacity, coverage, and performance of Wi-Fi networks, especially in dense environments such as stadiums and other public venues. By significantly reducing battery consumption in Wi-Fi, these 6/6E devices also satisfy the requirements in the IoT market.

This is a 2-day hands-on course where learners will analysis Wi-Fi 6 packet captures to gain an in-depth understanding of 802.11ax features and capabilities. This course will also cover the implementation challenges associated with the deployment of high density Wi-Fi 6/6E networks.  Further, this course will also provide a technical comparison between 5G and Wi-Fi 6/6E deployments in the 6 GHz licensed-exempt band.

This course shows the student how to use Wireshark to capture traffic and identify the security protocols that are being implemented in the network. This course will also highlight key capabilities in Wireshark that can be used to analyze and troubleshoot network traffic to identify security issues. This includes defining Wireshark security profiles, using Wireshark capture and display filters to identify protected and unprotected traffic, coloring rules, and using relevant Wireshark statistical tools, in addition to how to leveraging Wireshark decryption capabilities.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges of operating in a dense wireless environment and how Wi-Fi 6/6E overcomes those challenges
  • Define key Wi-Fi 6/6E network configuration features and capabilities that impact throughput and network performance, including OFDMA and MU-MIMO
  • Be familiar with and able to analyze Wi-Fi 6/6E packet captures
  • Detail the advanced technical mechanisms implemented in Wi-Fi 6/6E, including resource unit allocation, BSS coloring, and Targeted Wake Time
  • Discuss the implementation and optimization of Wi-Fi 6/6E network, including best practices
  • Describe the major technical differences between Wi-Fi 6/6E and 5G operations
  • Become informed as to why Wi-Fi 6/6E is important to our network future and how to better manage that importance in their job function

Course Prerequisites:

This course is designed to appeal to anyone needing to deepen their skills and knowledge of Wi-Fi and the implementation of dense wireless networks. The ideal student will have experience with today’s 802.11n, 802.11ac Wi-Fi networks.

This is a hands-on lab based course. Students will be using the open source packet analyzer tool called Wireshark to analyzing Wi-Fi 6/6E. Knowledge of how to use Wireshark would be advantageous but not essential.

Course Materials:

Students will be provided with an online course Student Guide, lab files, and lab packet captures via the Online School of Network Sciences (www.netscionline.com). In addition to any course reference materials.
