Course Description:

This course provides an in-depth discussion on the Wi-Fi 802.11n and 802.11ac specifications. This class is ideal for anyone looking for an in-depth understanding of WLANs and how they are evolving to support higher data rates and higher capacity enterprise solutions. wifi5 vhtsmall

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a detailed understanding of the IEEE 802.11n High Throughput standard. In addition to explaining the specifics of the 802.11n standard, this course also explains the underlying radio techniques that are deployed to attain the high data rates and the new deployment challenges that these radio techniques introduce, including coexistence and interference with existing infrastructures. Key features of emerging standard 802.11ac very high throughput will be discussed, and how this new technology will coexist with 802.11n.

This course assumes a solid understanding of how Wi-Fi works. Students not familiar with how devices connect and send data over Wi-Fi networks should attend the Wi-Fi 101 Foundation Course.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the enhancements provided by 802.11n over the previous standards
  • Define the 802.11n PHY and MAC changes that enable high data rate performance
  • Distinguish between the different MIMO techniques
  • List the challenges in implementing 802.11n and how to mitigate them
  • Discuss how the emerging 802.11 standards further complement and extend the capability of Wi-Fi networks
  • Recognize and describe 802.11n-appropriate acronyms and terminology (supplemental glossary provided by instructor)
  • Compare and contrast 802.11n with the new 802.11ac very high throughput standard


The target audience for this course is anyone in Engineering, Test, Customer Support, Technical Marketing, or even Sales and Marketing that requires either a detailed understanding of the 802.11n high throughput specification and deployment challenges, and seeks to comprehend the changes and implementation challenges of the new 802.11ac very high throughput standard, and how it can be applied to their job function.

  • Operations individuals that will provide 802.11 configuration and support services
  • Network Design Engineers that need to understand 802.11n and the emerging 802.11ac specification
  • Network Management individuals that are providing element and network management tools

Course Prerequisites:

This course is designed to appeal to anyone needing to deepen their skills and knowledge of 802.11 and the challenges of delivering high data rate services over WLANs. The ideal student will have some experience in networking and operations, and has attended the WiFi 101 Foundation course.
