Knowing the fundamentals of the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4), Ethernet and the TCP/IP protocol suite is vital to anyone who is in the networking field today, whether it be Service Provider level or Enterprise level. This insightful and revealing course has been designed to focus on the systems approach, the engineering thinking, behind the world of Ethernet and IP Networking.
The course is a combination of knowledge training, systems analysis, with hands-on exercises using Cisco switching and routing and Cisco IOS, revealing the details and opportunities of the Ethernet and TCP/IP protocol suite in a swift, comprehensive, and understandable way.

The objectives of the course are to:
- Develop a "hands-on" knowledge and skill set targeted at Ethernet, focusing on:
- Ethernet VLANs and VLAN Trunking (802.1Q)
- Spanning Tree Protocol
- The ARP Protocol
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Develop a "hands-on" knowledge and skill set targeted at TCP/IP networking in the following key areas:
- IPv4 Addressing and Subnetting
- Routing protocols and the control plane of IP (RIP OSPF, BGP)
- Understand the opration of the Transport protocols and error control of IP (ICMP, TCP, UDP)
- Understand and be able to explain HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH, and Telnet application protocols
- Managing Networks using SNMP
- Master the 7-layer OSI model, and the TCP/IP suite of protocols
- Be able to design basic IP networks and subnetworks using addressing expertise developed in this class
- Use and understand selection options of IP routing protocols
- Open Shortest Path First
- Border Gateway Protocol
- Use and configure fundamental properties of IP Quality of Service
- Understand the principles of Security in IPv4 Networks
- Investigate and develop tools to analyze and troubleshoot IPv4 and Ethernet networks
- Understand and discuss Wide Area Network technologies and applications
- Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Layer 3 VPN Services overview
- Frame Relay, Dial on Demand Routing, PPP, PPPoE Protocols overview
- The Next Generation Internet Protocol IPv6
These objectives are met by covering the necessary technical bases in a straight forward manner, by keep the content in context of the objectives - connecting the dots. Utilizing a short, subject specific architecture with exercises to drive home key points and Hands-On experience that reveal these points builds skills and knowledge based on Bloom's Taxonomy. This course to appeal to anyone needing the skills and knowledge of Ethernet and TCP/IP operation and addressing. The ideal student will have some experience in networking and operations, however no prior knowledge is necessary.
All students must attend with a lap-top computer in order to interface to the Router Lab. If the course is held at a classroom where computers are available, the Lap-top computer will not be required.
Students will be provided with a Course Student Guide and a Lab Guide. Also, a lab system for configuration and labs will be provided.
