- Satellite and terrestrial networking are converging. 1. SpaceX Signals Ambitions to Become a Full-Fledged Mobile Operator
SpaceX is signaling that Starlink could evolve well beyond satellite broadband and direct-to-cell coverage into a broader mobile communications business. The company’s acquisition of 65 MHz of EchoStar spectrum for $19.6 billion, including spectrum with terrestrial rights, gives it options that could eventually put it into much more direct competition with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

Why it matters: The traditional boundaries between satellite operator, Internet service provider and cellular carrier are beginning to disappear. 2. FCC Explores Satellite Communications Using Wi-Fi's Unlicensed Spectrum
The FCC opened a proceeding examining whether satellite direct-to-device communications could operate in spectrum currently available to Part 15 unlicensed devices, including bands used extensively by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The FCC specifically sees the concept as another way of providing connectivity where terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable.

3. Real-World Wi-Fi 7 MLO Testing Shows Significant Performance Gains
AT&T, RUCKUS Networks and Intel released results from enterprise testing of Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO). The trials measured as much as a 116% improvement in uplink throughput under interference and up to a 66% reduction in uplink latency for real-time traffic.

Why it matters: This moves Wi-Fi 7 discussion beyond theoretical PHY rates. MLO's ability to use multiple links intelligently could provide meaningful benefits in exactly the conditions technicians care about most—interference, congestion, latency and inconsistent RF environments.
4. Amazon Leo Proposes a 5,105-Satellite Direct-to-Phone Network
Amazon filed with the FCC to deploy as many as 5,105 additional satellites designed specifically for direct-to-device connectivity. The proposed Amazon Leo D2D system would provide voice, messaging, data and emergency communications to compatible devices outside terrestrial cellular coverage. Deployment is planned to begin in 2028.

Why it matters: Starlink isn't going to own satellite-to-phone connectivity uncontested. Amazon, SpaceX and others are creating an entirely new access layer in which a user's ordinary mobile device may move between terrestrial cellular and LEO satellite networks.
5. Charter and Cox Complete Their Massive Broadband Merger
Charter completed its previously announced transaction with Cox Communications in August. Spectrum branding, pricing and packaging are scheduled to move into Cox markets beginning in September. Charter describes the resulting organization as the nation's leading broadband and video company.

Why it matters: Consolidation on this scale affects far more than corporate ownership. It can influence DOCSIS evolution, fiber deployment, network architecture, equipment procurement, mobile convergence and broadband competition across a huge portion of the U.S. market.
6. T-Mobile Shuts Down Its Remaining 2G GSM Network
T-Mobile officially retired its remaining 2G GSM network on August 3, 2026, bringing to an end one of the longest-running commercial cellular technologies in the United States. T-Mobile had maintained 2G partly for legacy customers, roaming users and embedded devices.

Why it matters: This isn't primarily a smartphone story. Legacy alarm panels, telemetry systems, payment terminals, trackers and IoT devices can remain dependent on old cellular technologies long after consumers have moved on. Network sunsets often expose forgotten dependencies.
7. Wi-Fi 8 Could Arrive Earlier Than Previously Expected
Dell'Oro Group says enterprise Wi-Fi 8 equipment could begin appearing as early as 2027. Interestingly, one factor may be hardware economics: shortages and rising costs for older DDR4 memory could encourage vendors to redesign access-point platforms sooner. Dell'Oro also expects triple-digit Wi-Fi 7 revenue growth during 2026.

Huawei and HP signed a multiyear cross-license agreement covering Wi-Fi technology, including Wi-Fi 7 standard-essential patents. The agreement follows earlier patent litigation involving Huawei Wi-Fi technology.
