A Session Description Protocol (SDP) Profile for VoIP Analysis
This profile is for VoIP analysis in Wireshark. You need a number of profiles to be successful with VoIP packet analysis.
Session Description Protocol (SDP) defines the media parameters used during many VoIP calls. While SIP handles the signaling used to establish the session, SDP describes important details such as the media type, IP addresses, UDP ports, transport protocols, codecs, and other attributes needed for the endpoints to exchange voice or video. When calls connect but experience one-way audio, no audio, codec mismatches, or media sent to the wrong destination, SDP is often one of the first places to investigate.
A dedicated Wireshark SDP Profile helps engineers and technicians quickly identify and interpret these media parameters. By emphasizing connection information, media descriptions, RTP ports, payload types, codec mappings, packetization parameters, and other SDP attributes, the profile makes it easier to compare what each endpoint is offering and accepting during call establishment. SDP specifically conveys media formats, transport information, addresses, ports, and session attributes used to describe the media session.
For VoIP engineers and technicians, the profile provides a focused workspace for troubleshooting media-negotiation problems without repeatedly rebuilding Wireshark columns, filters, and display settings. It can help identify mismatched codecs, incorrect media addresses or ports, unexpected session parameters, and other conditions that explain why signaling may appear successful while the actual voice path does not work as expected.
