1-Day Instructor-Led Hands-On Lab Course
Available through Web-Based Live Delivery or On-Site Delivery
Minimum 8 Students – Maximum 16 Students
What Students are saying about this class:
- “[The instructor] explains things in a way that any of us can understand.”
- “Seeing scenarios first hand. Knowing where to look.”
- “Like that it is almost all hands on and not just talking and slideshows.”
- “Instructor presents everything very clearly and enthusiastically”
- “Like how the instructor periodically comes back to the same core concepts to reinforce them”
- “The best part was learning about all of the most useful features and tools in Wireshark, and the hands on exercises in the lab were particularly good at highlighting how to get the most out of the tool. Also Andy Walding is and EXCELLENT instructor he did an excellent job of covering the most important aspects of the tools and protocols and he has a very deep understanding of the subject material.”
- “The Online School is a great resource, I’m glad to know that this school exists!”
Course Description
IPv6 behaves differently from IPv4, and those differences become much easier to understand when you can actually see them happening in the packets. Wireshark provides the visibility needed to examine IPv6 addressing, Router Advertisements, ICMPv6 communications, tunneling, and other important IPv6 behaviors directly on the network.
Wireshark IPv6 Analysis in a Day is an intensive one-day hands-on course designed to develop practical skills for analyzing and troubleshooting IPv6 traffic with Wireshark. Using a “follow me” learning approach, students work alongside the instructor while examining packet captures representing common IPv6 operations and potential problem conditions.
Students begin by verifying and customizing Wireshark specifically for IPv6 analysis. The course then examines how IPv6 systems obtain and advertise addressing information, how Stateless Address Autoconfiguration operates, how Router Advertisements and RA Guard affect network behavior, how ICMPv6 supports essential IPv6 functions, and how IPv6 tunneling appears in packet captures.
The emphasis throughout the course is on connecting IPv6 concepts to packet-level evidence. Students learn how to use Wireshark filtering and analysis tools to isolate relevant traffic, recognize normal IPv6 behavior, identify unusual conditions, and determine what the packets actually prove.
The course concludes by bringing these individual skills together into a repeatable IPv6 troubleshooting workflow that students can use in day-to-day network operations.
This course helps answer questions such as:
- How should Wireshark be configured specifically for IPv6 analysis?
- What does normal IPv6 address configuration look like in a packet capture?
- How does SLAAC appear on the network?
- What information is contained in IPv6 Router Advertisements?
- How can RA Guard affect IPv6 communications?
- Why is ICMPv6 so important to IPv6 operation?
- How can IPv6 tunneling be identified and analyzed?
- How can Wireshark help distinguish normal IPv6 behavior from a real network problem?
- What repeatable process can be used when troubleshooting IPv6 with packet captures?
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to develop practical, hands-on skills for using Wireshark to analyze IPv6 communications in the following key areas:
- Customize Wireshark specifically for IPv6 packet analysis.
- Evaluate IPv6 addressing acquisition and advertisement behavior.
- Analyze Stateless Address Autoconfiguration.
- Examine IPv6 Router Advertisements and RA Guard behavior.
- Analyze ICMPv6 communications.
- Identify and examine IPv6 tunneling.
- Recognize important behavioral differences between IPv4 and IPv6.
- Develop a repeatable IPv6 troubleshooting workflow that can be applied in daily operations.
Audience
This course is designed for networking professionals who need practical skills for using Wireshark to analyze and troubleshoot IPv6 communications.
Ideal participants include:
- Central-office and field technicians who need to capture and analyze IPv6 traffic
- Network administrators and support personnel responsible for IPv6 problems
- Operations personnel who provide network configuration, monitoring, and support
- Network design engineers who use Wireshark as an IPv6 troubleshooting and analysis tool
- Technical marketing professionals working with IPv6 technologies
- Technical sales professionals who need to correlate IPv6 features with actual network behavior
- Engineering, test, and customer-support personnel who need greater visibility into IPv6 operation
The course is particularly valuable for technicians, engineers, network operations personnel, and support teams who understand IPv6 concepts but want to see those concepts operating in actual packet captures and use that evidence for troubleshooting.
Course Prerequisites
This course is designed for anyone who needs practical skills for analyzing IPv6 traffic using Wireshark.
The ideal student has some previous experience with Wireshark and a basic understanding of IPv6. However, the course uses a guided hands-on approach that allows students to follow the instructor through each analysis exercise.
Students should attend with a laptop computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux with a current operational version of Wireshark installed.
Class size is limited to 16 students.
Course Materials
Students receive a PDF Course Student/Lab Guide.
Access to specialized IPv6 Wireshark profiles, packet captures, and supporting analysis materials is also provided through the CellStream Online School of Network Sciences.
