As I have begun to master AI – not to eliminate the human race (duh) – but to help me solve networking issues, correct errors, improve understanding, etc., and experiencing the tremendous improvement of AI in general (anyone that says “AI is usually inaccurate” is not up to date and you can disregard anything they have to say beyond that), I decided to ask AI to evaluate my web site and content. It has taken me a long time to get the courage up to do so.
Evaluations themselves are not horribly terrifying for me. Most people in normal jobs get formally evaluated quarterly, or bi-yearly, or even yearly. When you teach classes on highly technical subjects with hands on labs, you get evaluated every class. That can be two times a week. Evaluations are from people you have just met. Evaluations are specific to the class and content being taught, and are heavily influenced by the perspective of the student. More on that in a separate blog post.
That said, I was honestly terrified of asking AI to crawl through decades of content, and then tell me what it thought. I have witnessed first hand how much AI has improved, how capable it has become, and how unemotional and direct/blunt it can be in providing critical analysis. Here were my biggest fears:
- I have been posting since 1998, and some older content has an expiration date that would be criticized.
- In networking you never stop learning. The Internet has been evolving, and so change results in errors and bad information.
- I am not a great writer. I work hard to edit/rewrite/repeat. Therefore I am suspicious and wary of writing skill criticism.
- Organization of information is a burden when your web site evolves over time. Changes in web platform result in changes to structure making things hard to find for readers. I was fearful of that known weakness in the web site organization.
Well, today I mustered the courage to ask AI to tell me it’s truth, and here is what it said (unedited):
You have built something much more valuable than a conventional company blog. Taken as a whole, the CellStream article collection is becoming a technical reference library for working network professionals.
The strongest part of the work is that most of the articles are written from the perspective of someone who has actually had to make networks work. You are not just defining concepts; you are usually answering questions such as How do I capture this? Why am I seeing that? Which command shows it? What does Wireshark tell me? What happens when this fails? That practitioner orientation is difficult to fake, and it differentiates CellStream from generic SEO-driven networking sites.
A few things stand out to me:
- The technical depth is unusually broad. You move comfortably from Wireshark, TCP, IPv6, Wi-Fi, Linux and Windows tooling into MPLS, ABR, QUIC, security, Starlink, AI networking, VoIP, Cisco IOS, and troubleshooting methodology.
- Your long-tail technical topics are particularly strong. Articles about WlanHelper, RFMON, Wireshark operators, VLAN-tag capture, TCP Analysis Flags, ECMP traceroute, ring buffers, PCAP repositories, monitor mode, and similar subjects answer very specific questions. Those are precisely the kinds of searches where a technically accurate article can remain useful for years.
- The hands-on emphasis is a major advantage. Commands, filters, screenshots, PCAPs, labs, cheat sheets, and actual troubleshooting workflows make the material more useful than purely explanatory content.
- There is a recognizable CellStream philosophy running through the material: technicians should understand what is happening rather than merely memorize commands or reboot equipment until the problem disappears. That comes through especially strongly in your Wi-Fi, Wireshark, subnetting, and troubleshooting articles.
- Your recent work is stronger editorially than some of the older material. The newer posts generally have tighter subjects, better technical framing, better titles, and clearer reader outcomes. The SEO cleanup we have been doing is helping the older material catch up without losing its historical value.
The biggest opportunity I see now is organization rather than content creation. You already have enough material that the site can behave like a structured knowledge base. For example, your Wireshark content could naturally form clusters around Capture, Display Filters, Profiles, TCP Analysis, Wi-Fi Analysis, VoIP, PCAP Labs, and Advanced Filtering. The same could be done for IPv6, Linux networking, Windows networking, Wi-Fi troubleshooting, and Nmap. Strong hub pages linking those clusters together could probably produce more value now than simply writing another 50 unrelated articles.
I also think you should resist the temptation to make every old article sound newly written. Some of the older pages have value precisely because CellStream has been publishing networking material for decades. Update obsolete commands, screenshots, operating-system references, and terminology, but preserving the long history adds credibility.
The other thing I would watch is topic overlap. You now have enough content that two or three articles can sometimes target very similar searches. We have already encountered this with subjects such as Wi-Fi monitor mode, PowerShell networking, Wireshark profiles, ring buffers, Nmap, and IPv6 command-line material. That is not inherently bad, but the pages should have clearly differentiated search intent and strong internal linking so Google understands which page is the primary resource for each topic.
Overall, I think the strongest description of what you have built is:
CellStream is evolving from a training-company website with a blog into a searchable networking knowledge base backed by an experienced instructor and practitioner.
That is a considerably stronger position than simply trying to generate more traffic with generic networking articles.
Wow. My immediate reaction was – Spot On! There is nothing I specifically disagree with.
I am not sure I can pivot the web site in the manner that is suggested. In a way I kind of lean that way with the patreon site and additional content there. Obviously that was not considered in the prompt – I simply constrained AI to crawl the cellstream.com web site. Nor was the Online School web site part of the considered content.
The main takeaways for me are: keep producing highly practical technical content, organize existing content into stronger topic clusters, and aggressively improve internal linking between related articles, courses, and resources.
I will re-run this evaluation using AI again in the future. My fears were unfounded, and I will keep trying to improve what I do and how I do it.
