Our Comprehensive Pcap File
Thanks for looking - this is our COMPREHENSIVE pcap file with hundreds of protocols - this is Version 12
Sure, there are others out there, but they all seem to be missing something, sometimes basic protocols like MPLS and many others. That said we asked for and received permission to build upon a pcap file is based on by Johannes Weber (his original blog post found at https://weberblog.net/the-ultimate-pcap/). We are truly thankful for that starting point. Thank you Johannes. From there we have added dozens and dozens of protocol types and conversations that round out what we think our students need as they learn and explore various data network protocols.
Mastering data network protocols and the Wireshark packet analyzer requires more than just theory—it demands hands-on practice with real-world traffic.
That’s why our comprehensive pcap file is an essential learning tool.
It’s packed with an extensive variety of protocols, from foundational ones like Ethernet, IP, and TCP/UDP, to advanced and niche protocols found in enterprise and service provider networks. With this single resource, learners can explore how protocols interact, dissect packet flows, and gain practical analysis experience that mirrors real network environments.
By working with such a diverse, protocol-rich dataset, students not only accelerate their Wireshark skills but also build the confidence to troubleshoot and understand complex networking scenarios in practice.
Grab this GZIP file, no need to unzip it as Wireshark will open it directly, and use this for learning, testing, development of profiles with Wireshark or whatever tool you like, and so much more.
Sometimes we use this file with our CTF Protocol challenges as well.
You can find our Wireshark profiles here.
Remember to share profiles with us if you can.
Enjoy!
Am I missing something?
