DHCPv4 Profile

A well-designed DHCPv4 profile in Wireshark can make troubleshooting much faster by bringing the most useful DHCP information to the surface immediately. Rather than opening each packet and digging through the protocol details, a dedicated profile can display fields such as DHCP message type, transaction ID, client MAC address, offered or requested IP address, server identifier, relay address, lease time, default gateway, and DNS information directly in the packet list. This makes it much easier to follow the normal Discover, Offer, Request, and ACK sequence and quickly recognize when part of that exchange is missing or incorrect.

A good DHCPv4 profile also helps when the problem is more subtle than simply failing to obtain an address. A client may receive an ACK but still be given the wrong subnet mask, gateway, DNS server, lease parameters, or information from an unexpected DHCP server. In larger networks, relay agents and Option 82 information may also be important. By combining useful columns, display filters, coloring rules, and filter buttons into a dedicated profile, Wireshark becomes a focused DHCP troubleshooting tool rather than a general-purpose packet viewer. The objective is to reduce the time spent searching through packets and increase the time spent interpreting what the DHCP exchange is actually telling you.
