Course Description

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the routing protocol used to exchange network reachability information between autonomous systems and is fundamental to Internet and service-provider routing.

CSI-HO-028-C – BGP Routing in a Day is a focused one-day hands-on course designed to give students a practical introduction to how BGP works, how it is configured, and how its major architectural components fit together.

Using CellStream’s hands-on “follow me” learning approach, students progress from BGP fundamentals into protocol operation, eBGP and iBGP, Route Reflectors, and BGP Confederations.

The goal is not to cover every BGP feature in a single day.

Instead, students build a solid foundation that allows them to understand:

  • What BGP is and why it is used.
  • How BGP routers establish relationships.
  • How BGP exchanges reachability information.
  • What differentiates eBGP from iBGP.
  • Why iBGP scaling becomes a challenge.

eBGP vs. iBGP

One of the first important distinctions students make is the difference between:

eBGP — External BGP Used between different autonomous systems.

and:

iBGP — Internal BGP Used between BGP routers within the same autonomous system.

Although both use BGP, their roles and design considerations differ.

Understanding that distinction is essential before progressing into more advanced subjects such as Route Reflectors and Confederations.

Scaling iBGP

As an iBGP network grows, maintaining BGP relationships between routers can become increasingly complex.

This course introduces two important architectural approaches used to address that challenge:

Route Reflectors – Allow selected routers to distribute routes between iBGP peers without requiring every router to maintain a direct BGP relationship with every other router.

BGP Confederations – Allow a larger autonomous system to be divided into smaller internal autonomous-system structures while still appearing externally as a single autonomous system.

Students learn why these mechanisms exist and where they fit within BGP design.
