Where can I get a degree in Network Engineering?

It’s graduation time. Congrats to all of you graduating!!! It seems that every year around this time someone will ask this great question. In my day, the answer was simple: none! Not anymore.

If you’re interested in pursuing a degree in Network Engineering (what I call Network Science) and related technologies, several universities across the United States offer specialized programs at various academic levels. These programs are designed to equip students with the necessary skills to design, implement, and manage complex network infrastructures.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

  • Western Governors University (WGU): Offers an online Bachelor of Science in Network Engineering and Security. This competency-based program allows students to specialize in either Cisco technologies or pursue vendor-neutral certifications like CompTIA. The curriculum includes hands-on experience and the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications as part of the program. (Western Governors University)
  • Purdue University – Polytechnic Institute: Provides a Computing Infrastructure and Network Engineering Technology major. This program emphasizes high-level network design and planning, incorporating both hardware and software components. Students benefit from real-world labs and opportunities for international study. (Purdue Polytechnic Institute)
  • New England Institute of Technology (NEIT): Offers a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Network Engineering. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical training, including access to a Cyber Simulation Range for hands-on experience. Students can also participate in cooperative learning experiences to gain industry exposure. (NEIT)
  • University of Advancing Technology (UAT): Provides a Network Engineering degree that prepares students for careers as network engineers, systems engineers, and network systems administrators. The curriculum focuses on current industry standards and practices. (UAT)
  • Skyline College: Offers an Associate of Science Degree in Network Engineering Technology. The program includes training in LAN technology, routing, firewalls, and server administration. Skyline College is also a Cisco Networking Academy, providing students with access to industry-relevant certifications. (Skyline College)

Master’s Degree Programs

  • Illinois Institute of Technology: Offers a Master of Applied Science in Network Engineering. This graduate program prepares students for advanced roles in network security, systems engineering, and IP network engineering. (Wikipedia, Illinois Tech)
  • University of Colorado Boulder: Provides a Professional Master’s in Network Engineering. The coursework-only program focuses on Internet, cloud, and intranet networking, aiming to develop the next generation of leaders in the field. (University of Colorado Boulder)
  • Old Dominion University: Offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Network Engineering. The program includes coursework in network design, server and desktop administration, and network management. (Old Dominion University)

Additional Institutions Offering Network Engineering Programs

  • DeVry University: Offers multiple Network Engineering degree programs across various campuses, including Illinois, California, Ohio, and Georgia. Programs range from certificates to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. (Universities)
  • College of Southern Nevada: Provides Network Engineering programs, including certificates and associate degrees, focusing on practical skills for immediate employment. (Universities)
  • Front Range Community College: Offers Network Engineering programs with options for certificates and associate degrees, designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the field.

These programs vary in focus, delivery method (online or on-campus), and specialization areas. When choosing a program, consider factors such as curriculum content, certification opportunities, hands-on experience, and alignment with your career goals.
