Routing is at the heart of every TCP/IP network. Whether traffic is moving between two local subnets, across a service provider network, or across the global Internet, routers must determine where packets should go and how to forward them toward their destinations.
IPv4 Routing 101 provides a practical introduction to the fundamental concepts behind IPv4 routing and packet forwarding. Students learn how routers make forwarding decisions and how routing protocols build and maintain the information routers need to reach remote networks.
The course introduces three important routing protocols—RIP, OSPF, and BGP—to demonstrate the differences between internal and external routing and provide students with a foundation for understanding modern routed networks.
Course Description
IPv4 Routing 101 introduces the basic principles of IP routing, packet forwarding, and routing protocols.
Students begin by examining how routers use destination IPv4 addresses and routing information to forward packets between networks. The course then introduces Internal Gateway Protocols using RIP and OSPF to demonstrate how routers exchange information within an autonomous network.
Students are also introduced to BGP and the role of an External Gateway Protocol in exchanging routing information between autonomous systems.
The course concludes by applying these concepts to basic routed-network troubleshooting, helping students connect routing theory with the types of connectivity problems encountered in operational networks.
