Understanding how data moves across a network is fundamental to working with Ethernet, TCP/IP, the Internet, and virtually every modern communications system.

Data Networking 101 provides a clear introduction to the essential concepts behind packet-based communications. Students learn how networking functions are organized into layers, how the TCP/IP protocol suite fits within those layers, and how packets are forwarded from a source toward their destination.

This course is designed to remove some of the mystery surrounding data networking terminology and provide students with a solid foundation for continued study in Ethernet, IPv4, IPv6, routing, Wireshark, and network troubleshooting.

The course is delivered online and self-paced, allowing students to complete the material on their own schedule within the course access period.

Course Description

Data Networking 101 introduces the fundamental principles and concepts used in modern packet networks.

The course begins with the layered model of data communications and then examines the TCP/IP protocol stack that powers the Internet. Students learn how network devices use addresses and forwarding information to move packets toward their destinations and where the addresses used by network devices originate.

By the end of the course, students should have a much clearer understanding of how Ethernet, TCP/IP, and packet forwarding work together to provide modern data communications.
